  1. 11. Cut beef chuck into 4cm chunks; season with salt and pepper.\n2. Place beef in the slow cooker with sliced onions, carrots and celery.\n3. Add tomato puree, red wine (if using), beef stock, Worcestershire sauce and bay leaves.\n4. Stir in pearl barley.\n5. Cook on LOW for 8 hours or HIGH for 4 hours until beef is tender.\n6. Adjust seasoning; serve with mashed potatoes or crusty bread.
